The ultimate purpose of education is to cultivate an independent learner (Shu Dingfang,2004), in other words, to teach students to learn how to learn. Flavell believes thatmeta-cognition is the knowledge of one’s cognitive process and the ability of regulating theseprocesses, which can effectively foster students’ learning ability. As a learning strategy, theresearch of meta-cognitive strategy has become part of language teaching studies, which hasbeen paid attention to by many experts for a long time.Previous studies mainly focused on describing and classifying meta-cognitive strategiesor investigating the relationship between its application and the results in second languageacquisition, or applying meta-cognitive strategies to the middle school and college Englishlearning and teaching. However, researches of meta-cognitive strategies used in ESP teachingare relatively rare. Through the analysis of English teaching at home and abroad, the futuredirection of college English teaching will be inevitably transformed to the teaching of ESP(Cai Jigang,2010). Before the experiment, the author conducted a survey on the need of ESPteaching in hospitals and medical institutes. According to the questionnaires distributed to theteachers from the universities of TCM and doctors from the hospitals, the author finds that:many medical graduates and doctors in hospital can not read English medical books orperiodicals or write medical applied writings in English. Their English communicativecompetences are poor. The results show the urgent need of conducting medical Englishteaching researches in medical universities.Based on these findings, this study is intended to integrate meta-cognitive strategytraining into TCM English teaching and explore the effects of meta-cognitive training onTCM English teaching in order to meet the trend of college English teaching, especially inTCM universities. The author has conducted an experimental study for a whole semester byusing the ways of questionnaires, tests and interviews. The collected data has been analyzed, and the conclusion is generalized that meta-cognitive strategy training can be effectivelyapplied to the TCM English teaching. The study shows that it can greatly improve the students’ enthusiasm and significantly, improve the scores of examination in TCM Englishlearning. Through analysis and discussion, some suggestions for the learning and teaching ofTCM English are proposed. The whole thesis consists of five parts. Part one is a brief introduction, which states thegeneral situation of TCM English teaching in universities of TCM, the significance of thestudy, research purpose and questions, research methodology and thesis organization. Parttwo is the literature review including the main theories of learning strategy, meta-cognitionstrategy and strategy training. Part three presents the whole empirical research process, including research design, the training process of the meta-cognition strategy, the proceduresand the data analysis. The author first proposed three research hypotheses:1) Meta-cognitivestrategy training can be effectively applied to TCM English teaching;2) Meta-cognitivestrategy training can greatly enhance students’ language achievement and performance inTCM English;3) Meta-cognitive strategy training can effectively improve students’ learningenthusiasm and help become self-directed learners in TCM English. In order to verify theabove hypotheses, the author carried out a one-semester experimental teaching in hisuniversity with two classes of the seven-year program students of TCM. Part four describes indetail the results of the present study, three hypotheses mentioned in the study are alsoconfirmed here. In part five, the author summarizes the main findings, discusses theimplications and puts forward the limitations of the present study and the recommendation ofthe future research. In the part of conclusion, the author gives a brief summary of the wholeresearch.
