The Importance Of Anticipation In Sight Translation With Reference To Sight Translation Presented In Cloze Form

Based on the fact that cloze test and interpretation are both knowledge-basedanticipating process. The thesis is intended to use a pilot form of ST which ispresented in cloze form to see the effect of anticipation on sight translation. Altogether,it is designed to answer three main questions:1) Are cloze test and sight translation significantly correlated in terms ofanticipating ability?2) Can sight translation presented in cloze form be considered as an excellenttool to discriminate different levels of subjects’ anticipating ability in sighttranslation?3) Can the ST presented in cloze form work as an efficient pedagogical tool toimprove the overall performance of ST?The experiment carried out in this thesis is divided into two phases. Phase one was atest on senior English majors from Shanghai International Studies University. All thesubjects were required to do cloze test and sight translation presented in cloze form tosee whether cloze test and sight translation are significantly correlated. Then, subjectswere divided into four groups according to cloze test scores and performances of sighttranslation in four groups were compared to see how anticipating ability influencessight translation.Phase two was conducted on a group of sophomore English majors from ShanghaiInternational Studies University. All the subjects were required to do two sighttranslation tests. However, the second test was carried out after three and half weeksof practice on sight translation in cloze form. The purpose of phase two was to provethe anticipating ability can exert positive effect on the performance of sight translation.By comparing the performances of two sight translation tests, the thesis draws thefollowing conclusions: 1) Sight translation presented in cloze form can be considered as an excellent toolto discriminate subjects’ anticipating ability in sight translation.2) Sight translation presented in cloze form can work as an efficient pedagogicaltool to improve the overall performance of ST.
