With the advancement of China’s reform and opening-up and the acceleration ofeconomic globalization, business interpreting has inevitably played a vital role inSino-foreign exchanges in which business cooperation could be achieved. Businessnegotiation, as one crucial means in international business communication, serves as acornerstone to the success of business cooperation establishment between differentcountries characterized by disparity in cultures, ideologies and business regulations. In thatcase, negotiation interpreting determines to a certain extent the smoothness of negotiation, and meanwhile is faced with daunting challenges. In business negotiations, interpretersshall act as more than a message-transmitter, but a facilitator, buffer and mediator, whichcalls for a comprehensive knowledge of the interpreter on negotiation interpretingcharacteristics like inter-activeness, cultural adaptation, disputes handling anddetail-accuracy, on interpreting principles and on a flexible manipulation of variousstrategies so as to successfully hold the whole situation and promote the result ofnegotiation.Cooperative principle and politeness principle respectively put forward by H. P. Griceand Leech and known also as two of the most significant theories in pragmatic field, haveregulated speakers’ behavior in interpersonal communication. Grice’s CP maxims werebasic principles by which we can make a conversation work while Leech’s six maximsunder the umbrella of PP serve more like a complement to CP and encourage a harmoniousco-existence especially when speakers violate CP rules just for the sake of emotionalfactors. Thus, when it comes to interpreting of international business negotiation, interpreters are expected to not only obey maxims of quality, quantity, relevance andmanner, but more importantly take politeness principle into full consideration, with a viewto avoiding misunderstanding and promoting a harmonious atmosphere.Aimed at demonstrating the two principles are monumental guides in interpreting ofinternational business negotiation, the thesis focuses on firstly discussing contents of CPand PP and previous theoretical researches on them, then delving into the characteristics ofIIBN and the qualifications interpreters are required of. Following that, the author puts in a great deal of ink on application of the two principles to IIBN together with practical casesstudy in the hope of gearing interpreters up with well-thought-up plans in terms of copingstrategies. The conclusion part puts everything in a nutshell, once again laying emphasis onthe guiding role the cooperative principle and politeness principle play in IIBN.
