Vocabulary knowledge involves two dimensions: quality andquantity. This thesis explores the correlation between breadth and depthof vocabulary knowledge and listening comprehension. There are merestudies on correlation between vocabulary knowledge and listeningcomprehension. What’s more, those previous researches don’t showidentical research conclusion on depth of vocabulary knowledge, sohaving a further study on correlation between vocabulary knowledge andlistening comprehension is necessary. This research based on theframework put forward by researchers, such as ChaPPelle (1998) Wesche&Paribakht (1996), Qian (1999,2002) and Qian&Schedl (2004). Thisstudy tries to answer the following questions:Q1: Is there a correlation between breadth and depth of vocabularyknowledge? What is it?Q2: What is the correlation between total scores of listeningcomprehension and the score of each individual part?Q3: What is the correlation between breadth and depth ofvocabulary knowledge and total score in listening comprehension andscores of each individual part?In this experiment, the subjects are200sophomores from five non-English-majored classes in Ji Ning Teachers’ College. The researchertook one test once a week and it took three weeks to finish the tests. Thenthe researcher collected the scores of the subjects. And finally,the researcher analyzed and compared the three tests results by usingSPSS17.0. The results support the following conclusions:1) The breadth and depth of vocabulary knowledge intermediatelycorrelate with each other. And the correlation coefficient is0.67.2) The scores of different parts in CET-4listening comprehensionare obviously correlated with each other, and there is high correlationbetween filling score and total score. And the correlation coefficient is0.81.3) There is obvious correlation between the breadth and depth ofvocabulary knowledge and total score and score of each individual part inlistening comprehension. The correlation coefficient between VLT andDVK is0.67, and the correlation coefficients between total score andVLT and DVK are0.52and0.46.
