With the development of the world civilizations and arts, Chinese arts will inevitably fuse with the West, as a result of which Chinese artists are expected to work harder in order to strike out a new direction in foster the distinctive national arts that are combined with the world. Wu Guanzhong’s painting is hugely influential for modern painting and greatly significant to our work as it gives light to our thinking about the future of Chinese oil painting, provides practical guidance for the elements of traditional Chinese art to be used in painting and helps me in setting a goal for my oil painting career. Although critics deviate in judging Wu’s art, his contribution to Chinese painting should be recognized. With the enlightenment of Wu Guanzhong’s artistic views, this essay discusses the future development of Chinese oil painting by analyzing the form and language of Chinese and Western arts and illustrating with pictures. With a careful analysis of traditional Chinese painting and aesthetic features of western painting, the author attempts to find a representation mode of oil painting originated from the inner world and the national emotion.
