This paper studies the implied author of J.M Coetzee’s novels. Implied author is an important concept of western literary theory which was put forward by Wayne Booth in The Rhetoric of Fiction (1961). Previous studies focus on Coetzee’s subsequent post-colonial ideas and post-modernism means of artistic expression. This paper analyzes the implied author’s image and performance in Coetzee’s novels. This paper mainly uses Gerard Genette’s narrative theory to distinguish the differences between the implied authors’ ideas and the narrators’. After this, this paper discusses how Coetzee’s acted as an implied author in his novels.This dissertation consists of introduction, text and epilogue, and the text includes three chapters.The introduction:A review of the studies that regard Coetzee. And this part also mentions the related narration for preparing the analyzing.Chapter1:The narrators in different focus modes of Coetzee’s novels. This part systematically classifies the narrators.Chapter2:The performance of the implied author in Coetzee’s novels. The narrator(?) have different personalities in a unique way. From which we can find the implied author’s voice.Chapter3:The reason and value that Coetzee emphasizes the implied author. Coetzee always let the narrators in his novels express themselves freely. This part mainly discusses the purpose behind.The conclusion:This part mainly emphasizes the necessity of the study of the implied author in Coetzee’s novels. Coetzee express the real personality by writing.
