Cooperative learning is popular worldwide in recent years, it has been put intoapplication in many subjects in teaching and learning, obvious achievements were observed.This method of learning is hot in China these days. In English teaching field, it is proved thatcooperative learning can be used to improve students’ reading and writing abilities, though theresearches of its application in college English listening and speaking are just few. At present,generally speaking, undergraduates’ English listening and speaking abilities still have a far wayto go, though the national requirements to their English communicative abilities have beenincreasing,it may be valuable to apply cooperative learning in college English listening andspeaking course.The current study aims to apply cooperative learning into college English listening andspeaking teaching, and find out the effects it has on students’ English listening and speakingabilities as well as their communicative skills and learning motivation, how the team formationin a team will influence the learning effect will be observed, too. Whether the students aresatisfied with cooperative learning and what benefits the teacher gains in teaching skills andabilities are also taken into consideration.This study of applying cooperative learning into college English listening and speakingcourse was carried out in a university, participants are49non-English majors in a college, dataare collected in several ways, in which include pre-test and post-test, questionnaires andinterviews.The analysis of the data shows that cooperative learning can help improve students’listening and speaking as well as communicative skills and learning motivation effectively; thestudents in heterogeneous teams gain more improvement compared with those in homogeneousteams. The majority of students think highly of cooperative learning, they wish to go on withthis kind of teaching the next term. The teaching skills the teacher gained in the cooperativelearning process is beneficial for the future teaching, though some problems still are there, thediscussion atmosphere is not so satisfying, the time distribution in classes still needsimprovement, students heavily rely on Chinese language in discussion, some learners do not sotrust in peer assessment, what is more, students’ communicative behaviors lag behind their communicative consciousness. Some suggestions are put forward for further studies.
