As the development of globalization, international trade plays a more and moreoutstanding part in economic system. Business presentation is an indispensable part forinternational and domestic business communications. Successful business presentations canpromote the international economic communication and cooperation, improve the company’simage and reputation, and open up new markets, which can help boost sales of new products. The success of Apple Inc. owing much to the excellent presentations of Jobs is an example.Aiming to set up an interactive relationship with the audiences, business presentation is usuallyfull of interpersonal resources. How to deliver a successful presentation is the main issue some businessmen care muchabout. According to Halliday, language is what it is because of its function. We use language tocommunicate, to convey information, or to demand or supply services-&-goods, whileinterpersonal meaning is used to measure how we interact with other people, how we establishinterpersonal relationship and how we express our attitude and our influence towards theirthoughts, feelings and behaviors. There are three linguistic devices that can realizeinterpersonal meaning: mood, modality and key. Martin does a lot in enriching the research ofinterpersonal meaning with his theory framework which covers attitude, engagement andgraduation. This thesis mainly discusses how interpersonal meaning is realized through mood, personsystem, modality and appraisal theory by five samples collected from a collection of businesspresentations. In the analysis, quantitative methods are used to collect statistic data; qualitativemethods are applied to analyze the data and make out what kind of expression is usedfrequently and how the interpersonal meaning is realized. After the analysis, this thesis concludes that:(1) As to mood structure, declarative areused more frequently than interrogative and imperative, because the main purpose of businesspresentation is to provide knowledge.(2) The first person pronoun takes up the largest part. Itis used either to distance or enhance the relation between the speaker and audiences. The use of‘I’ can identify the role of speaker and personalize the speaker’s attitudes. The use of ‘we’ canshorten the distance between both sides and emphasize the speaker’s similarity to the audiences.(3) Low or median value model operators are widely applied and high value model operatorsare less used to avoid too aggressive and arrogant.(4) The realization of evaluation system is achieved by the lexical level to express the speaker’s attitudes, emotions and beliefs toestablish good relationship with the audiences.(5) The features of business presentationlanguage are plain, clear and simply, avoiding the use of jargons. This study is hoped to provide some help for the further study and English teaching aswell in this field. As the description of the features for successful business presentation, it issupposed to set a model for the delivering of business presentation.
