Known as the father of China independent documentary, Wu Wenguang began his Hunger Plan in2010, looking for young volunteers and encouraging them to return to their native village, shooting the elderly interviewees those who have experienced The Three Year Famine, searching for the disappearing historical memory that scattered in the vast and rural countryside, and filling in the blank of grand historical narrative. In May2011, the program officially named as Folk Memory Project.The Folk Memory Project is the main object of this study. Under the background of Chinese Independent Film’s development, by investigating the project’s influence on young people and the village, the purpose of this study is to find the meaning of Wu Wenguang’s Folk Memory Project for young volunteers, historical archives, China Independent Film and society. This thesis is divided into the following sections,The exordium section introduces the background and significance of the thesis, puts forward the paper’s framework structure and innovation on the basis of the literature review both at home and aboard, and defines several important concepts in the end.The first chapter is a brief introduction of Wu Wenguang’s documentary creation experience combining with China Independent Film’s development history. Try to grasp the transformation path of Wu Wenguang’s documentary creation ideals. Find the relationship between Chinese Independent film and society. Investigate the origin, motive and purpose about Folk Memory Project. And finally, lay the foundation for the further research on Folk Memory Project. The description of Wu Wenguang’s personal creation path must not be limited to the time and works, to grasp the ideal logical change of him is more important.Chapter two is based on the works of Folk Memory Project and to analyze the direct influence of the project. Based on the different identity of young volunteers’ video works, try to apply the theoretical perspective of sociology, history, documentary and other related disciplines to interpret the impact of this project on young volunteers. At the same time, through the data from the young volunteers, so as to find out the project’s impact on the involved village.Chapter three discusses the meaning of the project from the view of China Independent Film’s development. As the contemporary mainstream of China Independent Film, Community Video faces many obstacles. Considering these obstacles, Folk Memory Project has many advantages on the production mode of transmission, the young director and the form of social intervention. Explore the new driving force in the development of Chinese Independent Film.The fourth chapter discusses the significance of the project on historical writing. Starting from the theoretical perspective of social memory, try related discipline combining, the knowledge of history and sociology, further investigate the significance and value that Folk Memory Project does in social memory and historical writing.In the conclusion part, based on an overall reflection on the preceding research, focuses on the practice of Folk Memory Project. By paying close attention to the vivid practice, the author gives a brief description of further research as there are several drawbacks in this research.
