Discourse Power And The Construction Of Translated Literary Canon

George Gordon Byron，one of the greatest romantic poets of Great Britain in the19thcentury, has played an important role in Chinese Literary history. In China, hispoetries had set off the upsurge twice from the end of the Qing Dynasty and thebeginning of the Republic to the May Fourth.Under the influence of the time andsocial environment in China, Byron ultimately becomes classical author. This thesis,based on the Discourse Power Theory by Michel Foucault, attempts to explore therelationship between the power and the translated literary canon.The introduction briefly describes the present study situation of Byron at homeand abroad and the meaning of the research on translated literary canon.The body ofthe thesis is divided into three parts, and each part is developed by the order oftime.The body includes the whole process of translation and reception of Byron’sworks in China and analyzes the different culture features in different periods. Eachperiod has its own characteristics as well as politcal background,which largely affectsthe status of Byron in Chinese literature.The thesis attempts to research on theprogress of the canonization and the decanonization of Byron in China, in order tofind out the connection between the discourse power and canonization of translatedliterature. The conclusion sums up the whole thesis and comes to the conclusion thatdiscourse power affects the process of canonization and decanonization.
