During ancient times. Chinese painting was called as "Dan Qing" referring to red and green and also glorious colors, from which we can see the importance status of color in Chinese painting. As an expression form of flower and bird painting, the meticulous painting regarded colorful nature as its object and color became one of the important forms to make up the picture naturally. The ancestors paid much attention to and made inductions of color long ago. The original painting principles of meticulous painting "drawing color adheres to the type" and "lyricism" have appeared distinct national characteristics. The use of color in meticulous painting sprouted from the Neolithic Age, reached a peak of depicting vividly soon in Five Dynasties and Northern Song period and gradually declined because of conformism in the late period. After entering the20th century, revolution of Chinese painting was increased to agenda again and absorbing traditional essence and Sino-foreign integration became megatrends of meticulous painting’s color development. With the coming of reform and opening, there is a stronger call from painters for breakthrough and innovation and many artists begin to look upon color as a breakthrough and keep innovating and trying, which results the appearance of diversified and personalized color style in current meticulous painting.This paper, based on the current situation, analyzes the development history of traditional painting color and the situation of contemporary one with multiple views to see the truth, clear thinking and further a higher development for meticulous painting.
