| With people’s increasing need for cultural life, live sports events represented bythe NBA are becoming more and more popular among audiences, while the sportscommentary is an important part of live sports events, the most directly and closelycommunicating with audiences. And its quality and level is crucial to satisfy demandsof sports events for appreciation on a higher level. The NBA commentary, like adazzling star among a lot of sports commentaries, is wonderful, vivid and rich as theNBA game itself and has strong attraction and appeal.This thesis takes impromptu NBA commentaries in the finals during the2009-2010season as the source corpus, and integrates the method of qualitativeanalysis with quantitative analysis to analyze impromptu NBA commentaries as wellas discuss the interpersonal meanings from two aspects of mood and modality, withinthe theoretical framework of Halliday’s interpersonal function.The author has transcribed and arranged the commentaries of seven games in thefinals, which are classified and analyzed statistically. In terms of mood system, thecommentaries can be of three types: the declarative mood, interrogative mood andimperative mood. In the light of the results, there are1058sentences each game onaverage, including1012declaratives,35interrogatives and11imperatives. The aboveindicates that the overwhelming majority of sentences in NBA commentaries are thedeclaratives, mainly giving information and expressing personal emotions; Theimperatives are adopted sometimes, mainly rendering intense scenes and firing up theaudience with his passion and dedication for the ongoing game; The interrogatives areused less, and most of them are rhetorical questions, which primarily strengthens theinteraction and shortens the distance between commentators and audiences so as tocreate a harmonious relationship and arouse audiences’ interests. At the same time, theauthor examines sentence features of NBA commentaries by statistics and concrete examples about words, sentences, etc. The striking characteristics manifest in moresimple sentences, elliptical sentences, interrupts, terminologies, ungrammaticalsentences, etc. Consequently, in this way, NBA commentators can convey lots ofinformation, simultaneously contributing to directly expressing their emotions andattitudes, rendering intense scenes, lighting the passion, and making the game moreexciting and excellent. As for modality, its types, values and orientation are studiedrespectively based on statistics and data analysis. It reveals that obligation andpossibility occupy a higher proportion in types; the frequency of median-value isrelatively high in values; implicit subjectivity is regarded as the main orientation, andmodal verbs cover a larger proportion, which shows modal variability and complexityin the commentary. It can demonstrate vividly the competitive scenes of NBA gamesas well as their ups and downs.The thesis extends the application scope of interpersonal meaning, provides a newperspective for the study of impromptu NBA commentaries and simultaneouslyenriches the research of NBA commentaries. In addition, through the analysis ofimpromptu NBA commentaries, the current situation of NBA commentaries is furtherunderstood as well as helps to better grasp NBA commentaries’ languagecharacteristics, application rule and the realization approach of interpersonal meaning.Thus, it is convenient for the audience to appreciate NBA commentaries and providereferences for sports commentators in our country. |
