Preliminary Study On Facework Of College Students:Questionnaire And Characteristic

From the1950s, the Chinese and foreign scholars have conducted a series of studies on the face. Scholars in the field of social anthropology, sociology, linguistics and psychology have defined the concept of face, trying to explain the events of face in the society. Although there are so many and complicated theories of face. We still lack the corresponding empirical research. In order to extending the research of face, this article studied facework (the acquisition a nd maintenance of face). Through literature, open questionnaire and individual i nterviews,this study proposed the dimension concept of facework. The four dime nsions of Face were defined as:(1) gain face. Individuals get face through their own efforts.(2) do face. Individuals get face through false words and deeds.(3) protect face. Individuals take a negative way to avoid the loss of face.(4) repair face. After the loss of face, individuals take some measures to r educe the degree of the loss.Based on the dimension of the face, we designed the preliminary survey of facework by reference to the literature, open questionnaire, as well as experts’ advice. We got309valid questionnaires. The results of exploratory factor analys is show that the dimensions of face does have four dimensions. After testing the appropriateness of the scale items, we got the facework questionnaire of college students which consisted of21questions. Formal test contain637valid questionnaires. The internal consistency coefficient of the questionnaire was0.812. The retest reliability was0.847. The reliability met statistical standards. We t ook correlation matrix, confirmatory factor analysis and convergent validity as th e indicators of the scale. The results showed that the structure of the scale met the requirements of statistics, we got the facework questionnaire of college stu dents which consist of four dimensions.We investigated the characteristics of facework. The results were drawn fr om the study:there were significant differences in sex, grade and parents’marit al status in individuals’ faceworkIn summary, we got the following conclusions:(1) College students’ facework consisted of four dimensions which were g ain face, do face, protect face and repair face.(2) The facework questionnaire of college students had preferable reliabilit y and validity, which could be the measurement tool for facework of college st udents.(3) The formation of college students’ facework could be impacted by the social and family environment. The results still need further exploration and ve rification.
