After the Opium War, Chinese History went through major turning points, and gradually fell into the abyss of being violated. Meanwhile, after the bourgeois revolution, the West countries experienced a rapid economic development along with which science and technology were increasingly improved and mature. The Chinese literati started to realize the national consciousness, and they gradually opened the eyes to the world. Given the failure of many wars, the Qing government began to recognize their own backwardness in technology and science, and the patriotic people of insight reached a consensus that it is urgent to make an introduction of Western culture and Western Art. Then, a lot of Western scientific works began to spread into China, among which Daiweijishiji and Weijisuyuan introduced the calculus and set off a boom of the calculus study in China. It is these two books, referring to Taylor’s theorem and Maclaurin’s theorem that aroused considerable interest of Chinese people. In view of the traditional knowledge of Chinese people, the research on power series was quite complete, but the understanding process of Taylor’s theorem and Maclaurin’s theorem was not so smooth. And their understanding of the differential technique was still mixed with traditional methods, rather than the pure Taylor’s theorem and Maclaurin’s theorem. This article consists of four parts, each part is as follows:The first chapter focuses on the social background of the late Qing Dynasty and academic background involved. The chapter focuses on the previous existing power series expansion results prior to the introduction of calculus. The second chapter discusses the contents about Taylor’s theorem and Maclaurin’s theorem in Daiweijishiji and Weijisuyuan. We learn the original appearance when Taylor’s theorem and Maclaurin’s theorem were first introduced to China, through which later generations studying on Taylor’s theorem and Maclaurin’s theorem can find the root and basis. The third chapter discusses the related research literature written by the Chinese people who study on Taylor’s theorem and Maclaurin’s theorem. These documents constitute one clue of discussing on Taylor’s theorem and Maclaurin’s theorem. The conclusion roughly points out not only the problems of Chinese people’s researching on Taylor’s theorem and Maclaurin’s theorem but also the connection between these two formulas and the power series expansion, indicating that it’s a gradual process for the Chinese people to accept these formulas.
