In this paper, on the one hand, the discoloration behavious of Acid Red B (ARB) were studied using glow discharge plasma(GDP) and spark discharge plsama in atmospheric pressure air. The ultraviolet-visible spectra, residual concentration of aqueous ARB solution and PH variation with treatment time were presented. The results indicated that the plasma oxidation, ultraviolet radiation were main factors accounting for the discoloration of ARB solution, and the water purification during GDP was faster than in SDP. ARB water purification reached97.16%and in GDP and92.76%in SDP with the energy efficiencies of7.16Kg/Kw·h and0.84Kg/Kw·h, respectively. The average yield of plasma oxidation was1.73Kg/Kw·h in GDP, but0.14Kg/Kw·h in SDP. One the other hand, the electronic excitation temperature of three different positions of the discharge space during the decomposition of resorcinol was caculated based on the intensity ratio of Hα-Hβ The result showed that the electrons close to the cathode owned the highest temperature, followed by the ones in the vicinity of the anode, and the electrons located in the middle of the discharge space owned the minimum temperature. To understand the relationship between vibrational spectra and the geometry structure of resorcinol essentially, geometry optimizations and vibrational frequencies caculation of resorcinol were performed at Becke’s three-parameter hybrid functional (B3) for the exchange part and the Lee-Yang-parr (LYP) correlation function (B3LYP) level using6-311G(d, p) basis set, respectively. Based on the geometry optimizations, the caculation of partial bond energies of resorcinol were done. The main absorb peaks were assigned with the help of GaussianView. The results showed that the results of experimental vibrational spectra were agree with the results of theoretically caculated vibrational spetrum. The absorb strength of the bonds located at3220cm-1,1608cm-1,1572cm-1,1143cm-1and954cm-1reduced, suggesting that the stretching vibration of the bonds C2-H8and C6-H10, the stretching vibration between carbon atoms of benzene ring and the rocking vibration in-plane of hydroxide radical, the deformation vibration of benzene ring and the out-of-plane rocking vibration of hydrogen atoms, the in-plane rocking vibration of the bonds O12-H14, O11-H13and C4-H9and the out-of-plane rocking vibration of the bons C2-H8and C6-H10were all decomposed. The caculated results of partial bond energies of resorcinol suggested that it was much easier for hydroxide radical to be degraded beacause of the weak bond energy in the discharge process.
