As a key technological equipment in the production of automobile body, the automotive panel trimming and piercing die has been a long-standing bottleneck which restricts the production of automobile body mould because of its complicated composition, the variety of types and the difficulties in processing them. Numerical control machining is a major approach of processing and manufacturing trimming and piercing die, and also a main factor which impacts the quality and cycle of mould manufacturing. So the research on the standard for manufacturing procedure and NC programming criterion of the automotive panel trimming and piercing die is significant for engineering. The problem of alternative and optimization for trimming and piercing die manufacturing processes, with the background of modern machining technology, is presented in the paper. Since the optimization is performed by constraints of satisfying the technical specifications of customers, the objective of optimization is minimized machining time or manufacturing cost. So the criterion of trimming and piercing die numerical control programming is establishedIn this paper, the typical structural features of the automotive panel trimming and piercing die and the criterion of the typical machining process of the die surface are studied. Then the approach of categorizing the structure features of trimming and piercing die processing is presented.According to the main processing features of pockets and surfaces on trimming and piercing die, the effects of the toolpath on machining efficiency and machining quality of NC processing are discussed, and the NC machining parameters optimization skills are studied. It provides a theoretical basic for establishing the criterion of trimming and piercing die numerical control programming.Based on the research on the classification and optimization of die and mould manufacturing process as well as its structural features, the criterion of trimming and piercing die numerical control programming is established by employing the PowerMILL software not only to improve the efficiency and quality of process design and NC programming but also to standardize the enterprises’manufacturing procedure.
