In the21st century, with the rapid development of science and technology, the non-renewable fossil fuel exhausts, and the environmental pollution is more and more serious. In order to maintain sustainable economic development, the development and utilization of new energy get more and more attention. Among these energy systems, the photovoltaic energy stands out as an important solution because it can directly transform solar irradiation into electricity by a photovoltaic generation system without inducing environmental pollution.In recent years, photovoltaic power generation system is widely used to promote the development of photovoltaic technology. The efficiency of photovoltaic systems, both the photovoltaic array’s maximum power point tracking control technology are the focus of current research in the field of photovoltaic. By taking the photovoltaic array as the research object, this paper emphasizes on the research of MPPT both in theory and experiment in order to improve the efficiency of photovoltaic cell. More details about this paper are listed as follows.(1) research background and present research situation of MPPT are summarized systemically.(2) The advantages of photovoltaic systems and classification are described. based on the operational theory and mathematical model, output characteristics of a photovoltaic cell are simulated by programming under MATLAB environment. Simulation and experimental results on a TH110(17) photovoltaic array show the accuracy of this approach.(3) The maximum power point tracking control principle and several conventional maximum power point tracking control method are summarized, and on this basis, the maximum power point tracking control strategy is researched, A MPPT algorithm based on particle swarm optimization control methods is proposed. The method is simulated and verified by the MATLAB algorithm.
