In recent years, growing traffic congestion has become the bottleneck of urban economy and social efficient operation, which restricts the sustainable development of cities. Taking Zhengzhou City as the object of empirical research, this paper focuses on the impact of the layout of urban land on traffic congestion, and establishes two econometric models from micro-and Area-scale respectively. Then based on the measurement results and analysis, several layout optimization countermeasures of urban land use are proposed from the purpose of sustainable development.(1) This paper does researches and comments on the outcome of the existing theoretical models of foreign comprehensive; analyses theoretical researches on the relationship of transportation and land use; and summarizes the defects in the existing research inadequate.(2) Then the paper analyzes the optimal choice of travel time in the process of urban commuter’s commute to work, and gives the analytical solution of the optimization model. At the same time a numerical simulation is executed for different parameter settings.(3) On the basis of empirical researches, establishes new index of traffic congestion and urban land layout characteristic. From the point of view of traffic actors,develop a microscopic scale relational model of urban land use layout and the level of traffic congestion,using Zhengzhou as the evidence, and analyzes the measurement results.(4) A Urban Area-scale econometric model is also established and the empirical results is analyzed. This model averages layout features in the scale of a certain size of land Area of urban land use, measure impacts of the different patches of land layout characteristics on the level of traffic congestion.(5) The contribution of traffic congestion is set out on the increase in transportation energy consumption. The layout of urban land use has a crucial role in the deterioration of traffic pollution and transport energy consumption reduction. Based on the results of the two models above, several uban land use layout optimization suggestions are proposed to reduce transportation energy consumption and traffic pollution, including modest reduction in the commercial area and residential area of distribution of differences, appropriately reduction of the dispersion of the residential land area, an appropriate increase in mixed land use,reasonable and adequate transportation network supply.
