Muzzle brake is an important muzzle device which can decrease the recoil energy greatly and then reduce design load of gun rack. However, blast wave can also cause the overpressure in the area of the gunners. In this paper, the muzzle flow field is numerically simulated and analysed. The content of the study includes2D numerical simulation and analysis of mortar’s muzzle flow field which takes both projectile and ignoring the projectile in account,3D numerical simulation and analysis of muzzle flow field with a muzzle brake like impact-reaction type which is used commonly,3D numerical simulation and analysis of muzzle flow field with a muzzle brake like impact-reaction type which contains blow holes and the comparison of these two muzzle brakes’ performance.First of all, the muzzle flow field, after the projectile driven outside mortars, was simulated to study how the overpressure values of mortar impact on the body. The classical model of interior ballistics, in terms of the gap of the bore and projectile, was established to calculate the interior ballistic parameters. According to the result, the flow field in bore was initialized with the projectile in the muzzle, and then the muzzle flow field, formed by the gas flowing out of the bore, was simulated by ingoring the projectile and considering fluid-solid coupling of the gunpowder gas and the projectile. The method of whole movement of block grids and dynamic layering method for structured grids would be applied when it considers fluid-solid coupling. Finally, clear shockwaves of muzzle flow fields could be captured which detailedly analysed the overpressure values of different monitoring points around the muzzle as well as the process of the gas flowing out of the bore. This method can provide guidance for study of muzzle blast wave.On the basis of the research on the mortar, two3D muzzle flow field models of a gun were set up, which contained a muzzle brake like impact-reaction type which was used commonly and a muzzle brake like impact-reaction type which contained blow holes. The formation, development and dying process of two kinds of the muzzle flow fields was analysed. Internal flow fields of muzzle brakes were compared, and then the different monitoring points’overpressure values and muzzle brake efficiencies were obtained. After the comparative study of the two models, the final conclusion was that the muzzle brake like impact-reaction type which contained blow holes was more superior. The analysis method will promote the research of muzzle brakes to some extent.
