Functional Constipation (FC) is one of the common diseases in pediatrics. The main symptoms are:the prolonged time of defecation, the strong and tough stool, the difficult defecat ion and the abdominal swelling. Some patients may aslo have other symptons, such as:anorexia, weakness, emaciation, etc. According to statistics, there are20million of the300million children in Chinese, who are suffering from FC. As the changing of the living standard and habits, there are more and more children suffering from this disease. It has become a problem which has an influence on children’s growth, gastrointestinal function, metal health, the development of intelligence, even the life of family. The traditional Chinese medicine considers that the dysfunction of large intestine and the malfunct ions of Lung, spleen, stomach,1iver and kidney are related to the FC.The treatment should combine the causes with the charactors of the sick children. The western medicine doesn’t have a clear reason for this disease, but believes that it associates with the lack of dietary fiber, water and exercise, the allergy to some food, the loss of defecation habits practice, drugs abuse, the factors of heredity and mental, etc. The main types of FC are slow transit constipation (STC), outlet obstructive constipation (00C) and mixed constipa-tion (MC). The treantments contain that reasonable diet, defecation habits pract ice, doing more sports, drugs, enema, physical methods and operation, etc. But the western treatments have many side effects and adverse react ion, it’s also difficult and limited for western medicine to therapy FC. Method:Assemble51cases in DongZhimen Hospital Affiliated to Beijing University of Chinese Msdicine. Analyse the data and learn the effect of the comprehensive methods of traditional Chinese medicine in FC. Result:1. There is no difference in sex of the51cases. The FC has2peaks in the ages1to2and4to5(the time of developing diet and defecation habits). More than a half of the cases has the below ordinary level of height and (or) weight.2. Among the51cases,80.4%has a high level of grade;78.4%has3or4types of primary symptoms. The main disease symptoms from high rate to low rate in turn are:the strong and tough stool>the difficult defecation> the abdominal swelling> the prolonged time of defecation.3. Analys ing the date of the two groups, in the treated group, the total effective power is96.8%; while the control group is90.0%.There is statistically significant between the two groups (P<0.05). Analysing the data of20cases who have3courses of treatment, shows that the disease symptoms are much improved. Conclusion:There are different goals at each age for FC threatment. We should improve the knowledge of FC in parents and chi ldren. Compare ing with the western medicine, the traditional Chinese method:prometing digest ion, removingstagnation, benefiting speech, is more effective in treating FC.
