As a musical style, art song originated in the Classical period and bloomed in theRomantic period. During the Romantic period of nineteenth-century, Schubert wasconsidered as the most prominent representative in art song field. But before Schubert,there were a group of excellent composers, represented by Haydn, Mozart andBeethoven. Their works of art songs played an important role in the musical historyalthough they focused more on the creation of symphony, opera, concerto, etc.The Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 ~ 1791) was anoutstanding composer during the classical period of the eighteenth century. He wasborn in Salzburg of Austria in January 27, 1756. In his writing career, opera,symphony, concerto and others occupied an important position, but the creation of artsongs can not be ignored. During his lifetime, he composed more than 30 art songs.Most of them are short and pithy, but having diverse styles and beautiful melody. As avocal learner and researcher, the author deeply knows that the learning of art songshas a profound meaning in the improvement of singing skills and the cultivation ofartistic accomplishment. The author analyzes the characteristics of Mozart’s art songsand singing style, which can provide the enlightenment for the readers and theauthor’s own.In this paper, the author starts from the concept, characteristics and developmentof the art songs and elaborates on the singing style of Mozart in detail through theanalysis of different creative periods of Mozart’s art songs. The author uses ownsinging practice to better the theoretical research and to better guide the singingpractice with theoretical research to accomplish the singing treatment in a deeper level.This thesis can be divided into four chapters: Chapter one is an overview of the formof art songs. The author introduced and analyzed art songs from the aspects of itsconcept, characteristics and general situations, which provides the reader an intuitiveway to understand the musical form. Chapter two discussed the creationcharacteristics of Mozart’s art songs. First the author let the reader have a basicunderstanding of Mozart’s art songs with a simple discussion of his works in different periods. Then the author analyzed the creation characteristics in the terms of language,style, theme, melody and control of tones, etc. Chapter three is the analysis of thesinging skills of Mozart’s art songs. The author took six representative works ofMozart for example, dwelt on the singing skills in ways of grasp of the singing style,mastery of the language, support of the breath and control of the tone. Chapter fourdiscusses significant role that Mozart’s art songs plays in the teaching of vocal music.To choose this topic, the author hopes to reach a consensus on the importance ofMozart’s art songs in teaching with the educators. And try to lay a foundation forfuture research through the writing of Master’s thesis.
