Chinese figure painting has developed vigorously in multivariant postures inmodern China, the growing of which was already cherished because of the fertilenourishment of ancient China. After thousands of years’deposit of Chinese culture,Chinese figure painting has undertaken the responsibility inescapable to distributehistorical culture of China as well as the mission to advance Chinese traditional art.To study the realism of Chinese figure painting and seek its enjoyment in question,constitutes a newer cognition of Chinese traditional aesthetics and its experience ofpracticing. The realistic enjoyment of Chinese figure painting keeps absorbingChina’s art history for thousands of years, and remains prospered, inherited, andperfected with art nourishment from both inland and overseas. Since time immemorial,the realism of Chinese figure painting shares spiritual pecularities of every timescarrying stigmas of each own. Modling with drawing lines first appeared on thepottery of Yangshao culture in the New Stone Age, which has developed to be the,deemed, sole choice in the modling principle of“Showing the spirit with form”. Fromthe Wei, Jin, South and North Dynasties till the present day, the drawing nature of itsown featuring the realism of Chinese figure painting, with the changing of times, notonly remains in exitence but will forge ahead into the future, though the roles andfunctions are somewhat different from each other. With the passage of time andChina’s ever-lasting progression of changes, open-minded thinking and tolerantattitudes is exerting impact on the development of Chinese figure painting. Drawingand absorbing the art essences of Western classical, modern and post-modern phases,respectivel, has not only enriched the forms of expression in Chinese figure paintingbut also retained the traditional techniques of Chinese painting. Together with the quickening pace of China’s opening and reform, Chinese realistic figure isreplenishing, with a brand-new face, the dazzling modern art circle, its old and freshlook displaying a newer painting vision by broader themes, materials and forms.Chinese realistic figure has constituted an art of painting truly developingindividuality and showing greater vitality and diversity, which integrates originality,appreciation, amuzement and inheritance, and which everybody is capable of enjoying.Chinese figure painting, with its unique form of representation and materials, hasdemonstrated the realistic interest in question, communicating the spiritual theme offigure painting. In a sense it has corresponded with the aesthetic appeal of the Chinesepeople. As a medium to diffuse Chinese culture, Chinese figure painting is beingappreciated by more and more Westerners. For such considerations, the paperresearches into and prospects the realistic art of Chinese figure painting, hoping for abeautiful future in its development.
