Chinese art could be seen as the art of lines and "sketch" is a unique pen and ink technique in Chinese painting and calligraphy. Sketch has expanded the novelty of lines. Sketch was used to describe the shape and contours of objects at first and then was used for representing representability. Nowadays sketch was remain the principal part to develop performance of itself. Sketch has been given new value and become an important language for visual expression of modern oil paintings.This thesis attempts to study the origin of sketch, define the meaning of sketch in oil paintings, to analyze the basic characteristics of line sketch in oil paintings, and to discuss the manifestation, techniques and styles of line sketch in modern oil paintings thoroughly. This paper attempts to analyze the vitality of line sketch in theoretical way and theoretical research of line sketch exploited combined with writer’s teaching practice.The current research status about line sketch is that, many researches about line sketch was almost limited to Chinese paintings and researches about line sketch in oil paintings was less common. There were no immediate reports about line sketch in oil paintings. In this paper different ideas from china and abroad were combined, line sketch was selected and analyzed separately. For one thing, the expressiveness of line sketch in modem oil paintings expand the practice and creativity of lines in oil paintings in a new manner; for another, from the theoretical analysis of line sketch, I try to highlight the unique artistic value of line sketch during my oil painting process.
