In order to investigate how communal relationship and indebtedness affect help decision-making process, this study (1) revised the communal strength measure with157college students preliminary and then got a good reliability and validity results after the re-test.(2) Under the condition of B who has a low communal strength with you gave you a hand a few days ago, we designed a scale with4virtual situations which depict A (with high communal strength)and B(with low communal strength) need your help, and test how the202college students make a decision to help A or B.The results showed that:(1) Cost and benefit affect indebtedness significantly. Benefit has no effect on indebtedness but cost affect indebtedness significantly. This result confirmed what Aikawa(1988) has found that cost affect indebtedness more than benefit.(2) There are differences between conditions which depict both A and B ask for a help, A ask for a help and B ask for a help on the tendency of helping B when B is in dilemma. But there is difference between condition of neither A or B ask for a help and A and B ask for a help (3) The communal strength with A has a negative influence on helping B under the condition of both A and B&neither A or B ask for a help, but the communal strength and indebtedness with B has a positive influence on helping B under both two conditions. The communal strength with A has a negative influence on helping B under the condition of asking for a help from B, but the indebtedness with B has a positive influence on help B under this condition. The communal strength with A has a negative influence on helping B under the condition of both A and B ask for a help, but the communal strength with B has a positive influence on helping B under this condition. All these above verified the priority of indebtedness and communal relationship when B asks for a help.(4)The influence of indebtedness with B on helping B under the condition of B asking for a help exceeds the corresponding influence under conditions of neither A or B ask for a help and only A asks for a help. It means that whether the help-giver asks for a help will affect how subjects decide along with the influence of the communal strength with a high communal relationship partner.
