Since the new century, the creation of documentary historical themes appears an upwardtrend. The diversity of narrative modes makes more room for development of documentaries. In2005the documentary "the imperial palace" emerges, the historical documentary causedwidespread concern in documentary academia and industry, full of visual impact pictures, richstory events and multi perspective realized the innovation and breakthrough of historical themesdocumentary. Subsequently, the large historical themes documentaries "Rise of Great Powers","New Silk Road","Revival Road","Daming Palace","Summer Palace" and "Dunhuang" set offa new round of creative peak and creat a new creation stage of historical documentary.Although we say that the booming of the major historical themes documentary thanks to theadvances in recording technology and digital technology, the core reason is that the changing ofnarrative concept.To be compared with the traditional historical documentary, the narrative ofthe large historical themes documentary has what changes in this period. This article mainlyanalyzes narrative of this period historical themes documentaries from the five parts, from thedefinition to define the narrative elements, from narrative features to narrative style, at lastestimating the main creative tendency of historical documentary the main creative tendency infuture, to promote the creation of the practice of the historical documentary. This paper is mainlydivided into the following five parts:The first: historical documentary overview. This chapter is mainly in the basis of defininghistorical themes documentary, which introduces the types of historical themes documentary andmakes a brief overview of major historical themes documentary from2005to2010.The second: the narrative elements of our country large historical documentary.
