Beginning Of Adulthood Self-identity Development Level, Status And Its Relationship With Individual Motivation

Ego identity was the research hotspots in the field of youth development, most scholar investigate ego identity development issue of adolescent or university student, but ignore to research all age bracket and non-college individual. Fortunately, overseas researchers more and more take the ego identity development and it’s influence factor by age bracket of emerging adulthood of late years. And Chinese lack of this kinds of empirical study, so that it was powerful meaning work in theory and practice by, developing ego identity measuring tool which conforms to the characteristic of Chinese emerging adulthood and the psychological surveying standard, investigate Chinese emerging adulthood’s level of ego identity development and the distribution of identity status, and analysis the principal factor influence emerging adulthood’s ego identity development.In view of this, this research utilization questionnaire method to authorized strength questionnaire of emerging adulthood’s ego identity, and investigates a total of 519 emerging adulthood individual from Chongqing, Sichuang, Guangdong, Jiangxi, Beijing with the Chinese modified versions of the Extended Objective Measure of Ego Identity Status(shuqing wang,2006), and the Multi-Measure Agentic Personality Scale(Cote, 1997). The results mainly indivate that:(1) Emerging adulthood’s ego identity can be divided into six psychology dimension which are the occupation exploration, occupation commitment, occupation identification, intimacy exploration, intimacy commitment, intimacy identification. Emerging adulthood’s ego identity questionnaire which is constituted by 20 questions has high reliability and validity. It can be used as a measuring tool about emerging adulthood’s ego identity.(2) Emerging adulthood’s ego identity total score in the medium range, and occupation exploration, intimacy exploration, intimacy commitment get the highest scores; male ego identity development higher than female, male intimacy commitment significant higher than female; middle school and following school record higher than other degree in occupation commitment, occupation identification, intimacy commitment; college individual intimacy commitment level promotion with grade; student of liberal art higher than student in science in occupation commitment, and less in intimacy identification; married person in the highest intimacy commitment and intimacy identification, the person who fall in love more than single feeling satisfied in intimacy, the person who had love experience higher than who never been in love in intimacy identification, the person who have more love experience in higher intimacy identification level.(3) Emerging adulthood’s ego identity can cluster six different statuses which was Undif:undifferentiated status, Occ-Ach/Inti-Fore:occupation achievement/intimacy foreclosure status, Diff:Diffusion status, Ach:achievement status, Occ-Diff/Inti-ED: occupation diffusion/intimacy exploration in depth; male more than female in Occ-Ach/Inti-Fore, Ach and less in Occ-Diff/Inti-ED; second grade graduate student more in Undif than others, freshman more in Occ-Ach/Inti-Fore than others, second grade graduate student and freshman more in Occ-Diff/Inti-ED than others in the same, person who finish college more in Ach than who still in college, nongraduate more in Diff and Occ-Ach/Inti-Fore than graduate student, less in Occ-Diff/Inti-ED; student of liberal art more in Occ-Ach/Inti-Fore than student in science; single person more in Occ-Ach/Inti-Fore than who fall in love, married person more in Ach than single individual.(4) Agentic personality include self-esteem, purpose in life, internal locus of control, ego strength, the questionnaire has high reliability and validity except self-esteem; agentic personality was predictive variable of emerging adulthood’s ego identity.
