| Acknowledgements play the important role in graduates’thesis and dissertation. It can provide an opportunity for the author to express the thanks to the people and the organizations in the process of writing. It also shows the author’s modest academic spirit and the feel of thanking. At last, it helps the author build the status in academic field and makes the end of his research process.In order to know the acknowledgements better and find out the structure of the graduates’thesis written by the native speakers of English and Chinese. This research collects a size of100acknowledgements, in which50English acknowledgements are chosen from ProQuest Digital Dissertation, and the other50Chinese acknowledgements from China Master Dissertation Full-text Database. The English and Chinese corpuses include the same disciplines:lnguisitics, philosophy, biology, computer science and mechanical engineering. This research uses the Swales’Move-Step method to analyze the corpuses with the reference of Hyland’s model to summarize the structure of the acknowledgements of English and Chinese. Next, this research analyzes the English and Chinese corpuses to find out how the moves and steps realize the goal of communicating, and also analyzes the differences in words and sentence structures between English and Chinese. Through the contrast between the move structure and the linguistic features, this research aims to find out the differences between the Chinese and the Western culture. At last, this resaerch respectively analyzes the English and Chinese corpuses according to the discipline, to get the differences of the moves and steps in the different disciplines. |
