Deliberate Misinterpretation (DMI), different from the general termmisunderstanding, is actually defined as the hearer’s intentional act, deliberatelymisinterpreting the speaker’s conversational implication on the basis of an overallunderstanding of the speaker’s meaning. So DMI, which is a linguistic phenomenon anda communicative strategy as well, has been greatly and widely applied not only in lifebut also in TV art forms such as Chinese comic mini-plays, cross talks and so on. In thefulfillment of both goals: the humourous one and the one for the positive and negativeevaluation of life for the audience, Zhao Benshan’s comic mini-plays have found wideapplications in DMI, letting people benefit a lot while laughing.The thesis aims at expounding the mechanism genaration, predisposing factors andmethods in the formation of DMI in Zhao Benshan’s comic mini-plays underAdaptation-Relevance Model from a new theoretical perspective. The innovation of theinvestigation reveals how the hearer, the dominant role in verbal communication adaptsto and relates the linguistic context during DMI.The whole thesis is divided into five parts. Part one presents a general introductionto the thesis, including the objects, the aims and significance of the research, thecollection of the language data and the arrangement of the chapters; Part two provides aliterature review based on our categorization of the previous and relevant studies athome and abroad; Part three introduces the theoretical framework underAdaptation-Relevance Model. Part four discusses three aspects of DMI in ZhaoBenshan’s comic mini-plays, such as the mechanism generation, predisposing factorsand the formation methods; Part five is the concluding part, exposing its findings andlimitations as well. |
