Compliments are an indispensible tactic employed in interpersonal relationships ina civilized society. The use of compliments has several important functions, such ascreating an atmosphere of harmony, building close, intimate relationships and providingpeople with confidence and encouragement. It is for that reason that compliments havebeen called “social lubricant”. The majority of compliments in use are broadly similarwith minor differences. The various factors responsible for this variation includenationality, geographical location, education level, religion and psychological behavior.The topic of compliments has been addressed by many researchers from the point ofview of sociolinguistics, pragmatics and cross-cultural communication. All of theseresearchers have provided a considerable amount of results. We using previous researchas a basis, compare the following aspects of compliments in Russian and Chineselanguages: situation, object, response, syntax and vocabulary. This comparative studydemonstrates the differences between the use of compliments in these two languagesand the resulting cultural differences. This study has used a large amount of existingdata on the use of compliments in language and cross-cultural studies on Russia andChina. In addition questionnaires and interviews were used.
