Philip Sidney(1554-1586)was the English Courtier, poet andtheorist in Elizabethan period.His The Defence of Poetry reflectshumanism ideology. It is the the beginning of humanist culture,impacting on the development of English culture profoundly,contributing positively to the culture prosperity of Elizabethan period.The Defence of Poetry is an essay. It defends for the nature andsocial function of poetry.It advocates that poetry is the free feigningunder the framework of nature.It advocates that poetry, as history andphilosophy, can reflects truth and teaches human being. And also,poetry prevails the other two, poetry teaches, delights. Besides justifyingthe poetry The Defence of Poetry tries to explore the National poetrytheory, proposing the national poetry language.The Defence of Poetry refuted the attack from the Puritanism, isalso the higher presentation to the development of poetry andanalyzing the humanism of this “New flower.The nature and theme ofpoetry reflects his philosophy to the poetry. Poetry is theself-presentation,not the dependent of theology.The Defence of Poetry made the preparation for thedevelopment, building the positive environment for the coming of‘Golden Period’. Also, it profoundly influences the culture of later time.
