The HSK is the “Hanyu Shuipin Kaoshi (Mandarin Chinese Level Examination).”The HSK is a Chinese language exam designed for foreigners and Chinese ethnicminorities to determine their level of language proficiency. HSK is divided betweenthe old edition and the new edition. The old edition exam was first given in1989; thenew edition was implemented in November2009.This article will assess the HSK in its entirety and includes the followinginterrelated topics: an explanation for the adjustments necessary on the exam,acomprehensive analysis regarding relative problems, and a detailed discussioncomparing the format,weight of each section,areas of importance, and the readingcomprehension system between the old and new editions including the correspondingteaching methods.During this research, the author found that regardless of the changes made to theold HSK edition to draw more test takers, or to further the popularity of Chinese,changes were imperative. After the adjustments were made, the level of difficulty ofthe new HSK became more in line with Chinese working environment requirements.The author collected and analyzed verifiable data and researched the new readingcomprehension system while providing constructive suggestions in hopes of promotingthe new HSK test format and paving the way for future test takers.
