Focused on functionalist approach, this thesis aims to provide suggested translation requirements for different types of public signs translation errors. As "the face of the city", public signs play a significant role in people’s life and intercultural communications. Thus, the translation of public signs is becoming increasingly important. It influences not only the life of foreigners in China, but also the international image of China. Therefore, great attention should be paid to the translation of public signs.Public signs are composed of pictures, colors, words, letters or the combination of the elements above to indicate the function, direction of certain public area or facilities, to provide prompting information and give guidance. In this thesis, the features, classification and functions are discussed.In1970s, functionalist approach comes into being after long time development, forming systematic theories including Katharina Reiss’s Text Typology, Hans Vermeer’s Skopostheorie and the Three Rules, Justa Holz-Manttari’s Translational Act, and Christiane Nord’s Function plus Loyalty, all of which prove that translation is a purposeful action.Public signs are of purely practical use. Functionalist approach is of great importance for the evaluation and guidance of public signs translation from Chinese to English. The thesis is composed of six chapters. In Chapter One, the author starts with a comprehensive introduction of public signs and significance of their translation; then a detailed literary review is provided, including of both general and functionalist approaches to the translation of public signs; moreover, in order to make this thesis targeted at city public signs translation, the author makes a special review of public signs translation of specific cities in China. In terms of public signs, the author gives a different definition and introduces from its elements, then the features, classifications and functions are provided respectively. Functionalist approach plays an important role in the C-E translation of public signs. In the thesis, on the basis of historical overview, the author introduces the functionalist and their theories in great details, and then followed by the application of these theories. In chapter five, the errors of C-E public signs translation are classified into lexical, grammatical and pragmatic categories. The author finally gives suggestions when translating public signs from Chinese to English.
