Adler was the founder of individual psychology. Inferiority was divided into inferiority feelings and inferiority complex by him which was Adler’s original concept. People usually take a negative attitude towards the inferiority and tend to deny being inferior, but Adler believed that everyone, to some level, had inferiority feelings, its development of the individual has a positive role in promoting. Serious inferiority feelings, however, could develop an inferiority complex, which made the individual produce the mental illness, or even commit suicide to get the flesh and the spirit of liberation. But, the individual of victims of popular inferiority complex, transformed by the experience of life and the evolution, could drive individuals continue to struggle, eventually surmounted the inferiority complex, so that life could be sublimated. Therefore, this essay quotes some famous writers to mainly discuss the active effect towards literature of Adler’s inferiority theory. The full text is divided into five parts:Introduction:Generally talk about the feasibility of Adler’s inferiority theory towards literature, analyze the present situation of interiority theory and the main research methods and contents in this part, and expound the academic and practical significance of this thesis.Chapter Ⅰ:A brief summary of Adler and the formation of his inferiority theory, which is closely related to his personal experience and based on Nietzsche, Vaihinger, Darwin’s philosophy and natural science.Chapter Ⅱ:Discuss Adler’s inferiority theory and it can push forward the writer to write, from creative motivation. First of all, briefly describe Adler’s inferiority theory. Secondly, explore the association of Adler’s inferiority theory and the writers’creative motivation, namely the writers’inferiority originate from life, have its realistic basis, such as physical defects, gender discrimination, social experience, etc. At the same time, the inferiority can stimulate the writers to produce creation and expression of desire, which become a writer’s creative power.Chapter Ⅲ:Adler’s inferiority theory can get to sublimate in the process of literature creation. First, there are some different and same ideas in Adler’s "inferiority-compensation" and Freud’s "daydreaming-compensation". And the nineteenth Century British writer Jane Austen will be given an example to illustrate how the creation of writer is to realize the compensation of psychological needs. Second, Adler’s inferiority complex sublimation theory and "sexual instinct sublimation" theory are very quite different. And take Shi Tiesheng for example to explain how the writer’s inferiority complex to sublimate.Chapter Ⅳ:Mainly discuss the role of Adler’s inferiority theory in the analysis of literary works, from the work itself. In this chapter, we analyze the characters of the literary works with Adler’s inferiority theory. Firstly, explain the characters in the works will resist inferiority by self-respect and take the French writer Stendhal’s red and black as an example. Secondly, generally talk about the characters in the works that they overcome their inferiority to pursue superiority and make Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park as an example to analyze.Conclusion:There is a beautifully significance in Adler’s inferiority theory towards literature, but the defects of his theory also can not be ignored, so we must be highly attention.
