In this article, I present Xunzi’s answer to the question,"Why should I be moral?" This question really is "What motivations do or can I have to be moral?" It is an appropriate and necessary question for Xunzi. According to Xunzi, one should be moral because it is the best way to satisfy over the long term the total set of the agent’s desires. And desire can be distinguished as original desire and specific desire. The reason why people would think morality hinders the satisfaction of desires is that their original desires are combined with initial and most direct objects, rather than objects prescribed by morality. Bases on prudential reasoning as well as arduous process of seeking knowledge, people will choose to desire moral objects. Moreover, there are some innate human feelings and emotions which already find their expressions through morality initially. As a result, after a long period of accumulation, moral objects will be integrated with original desires and acting on morality is to satisfy desires. Throughout this process, the motives of the agent are provided by the original desires.
