Over the past a few years, spectacle photography has been gaining its visibility and popularity in modern Chinese photography community, getting its niche as a new trend in the world of visual art. In this thesis, the author will devote his effort to the systematic study of spectacle photography with the aid of aesthetic modernity theory. In the first place, the unique position of spectacle photography in modern Chinese photographic context will be explored on the bedrock of the trend’s social and artistic context while seeking support from the western literature criticism theory. Secondly, by combing through the complicated relations of modernism and aesthetic modernity, the author will attempt to probe and summarize the content and features of the aesthetic modernity, and he will also apply it with the current situation in modern Chinese photography community, thus establishing the connection between aesthetic modernity and photography of China; and prepare for further discussion of the special status of the spectacle photography. In Chapter3, the author will explain in detail the spectacle photography’s traits of epistemic reflexivity, forbearance and refusing mediocrity, from angles as social value, methods, picture language and etc. In Chapter4, starting from the internal inconsistency of the aesthetic modernity theory, i.e. the issue of self-discipline of art, the author is going to analyze the potential dilemma for spectacle photography on perspectives as its in-built problems and the possible weakening of its social function respectively.All in all, based on the features and inconsistency of the aesthetic modernity, the paper tries to picture the status of spectacle photography in modern Chinese photography culture, also, gain an insight into its preciousness as a form of visual art and its irreplaceable social and cultural value. Further more, the thesis will also try to look for possible problems the art may be faced with today or in the foreseeable future so as to come up with solutions. Besides, as a newly-born style of photography, spectacle photography sill needs systematic, in-depth and theoretical textual analysis. Hence this thesis may also be able to contribute to the theoretical innovation.
