As a special phenomenon in the history of international cultural exchange, Yu-Tang Lin and his works have always triggered a wide range of debates. The characters in his works who load with profound Cultural connotations are unique in literary history. This dissertation will analyse the images of Chinese women in his English novels in order to reveal the cultural connotations behind these images and the underlying motivation to generate these images. Furthermore, based on those discussion presented above, the author will locate these images in both history of cultural transmission and history of Chinese literature.This dissertation is divided into three parts:Part1analyzes the different cultural connotations of these female images on the basis of the different types of the female images in Lin’s English novels. Part2discusses the underlying reasons of creating these special female images. The author believes that, Lin’s works aiming to spread Chinese culture and most readers are from western countries are closely related to his own cultural choices and his motivation to meet the expectations of western readers. In addition, when he narrates the traditional Chinese culture, the representation of the "self of Orientalism" is one of the reasons why his works are popular among western readers. Part3locates these Chinese female images in both the history of cultural transmission and history of Chinese literature. From the perspective of the novel art appreciation, all these female images only have single character and lack vitality:while from the perspective of cultural transmission, as the "messenger " of the exchanges and transmission of eastern and western culture, these images have traditional Chinese cultural connotations and its Cultural heritage features should not be neglected.Culture is the common concern of the world in the context of globalization. In the 1930s and1940s, Yu-Tang Lin successfully introduced Chinese culture to western readers. This act inspired us that we should establish our own cultural standpoint, maintain our cultural identity, promote our own cultural brand, and most importantly enhance our own cultural strength. Therefore, the discussion about these images loaded with Chinese cultural in Lin’s English novels is still of great significance nowadays.
