Not Only The Soil

Solid materials have been taken as the entry point of this research. This paper firstly reviewed the history of solid materials being used in art and analyzed the physical property, visual characteristics, and the metaphor of solid materials. This paper highlights the investigation of the history and the current using solid materials as the media of artistic creation in modern art and analyzed the types and the usage of solid materials that artists used. At the end, this paper analyzed Antoni Tapies, Antony Gormley, and Xu Bing’s art works which used solid materials as the media of artistic creation. This paper hopes to provide artists and researchers some references by researching the using of solid materials as the media of artistic creation.
