With its various and varied meanings and usages "YE" is a frequently used word in modern Chinese which presents itself as tricky as often mistakenly used by foreign students. In this thesis we were trying to do a closer research through combined approaches of case study, inter-language analysis and questionnaire, etc. to reveal some regularity that demonstrates the status and developing process of examinees’ knowledge of the word.The thesis is comprised of7chapters:Chapter1:Preface. In this chapter we introduced the overview of the study as well as a literature review which includes both the strengths and disadvantages of earlier study.Chapter2:The categorization of meanings and usages of "YE"Chapter3:The theoretical basis and hypothesis based on the proposed dimensions for knowledge of Chinese Adverbs.Chapter4:The case study. In this chapter we reported the process of the case study and illustrated the inter-language developing process with a keen focus.Chapter5:Explanations to the revealed regularity.Chapter6:A survey to Japanese and English-speaking students was conducted as a double-check inspection of the conclusions drawn from the case study.Chapter7:A brief summary of the thesis. Advise some teaching tips and state the disadvantages of the study.
