A considerable part of Ryunosuke Akutagawa’s works are Christian content, which is mainly drawn material from the Bible and Christianity works. This part is specially called "Christian stories collection". Akutagawa kept on writing them throughout his whole literary career. There’re phenomenon which indicate his inconsistent attitude towards Christianity. The ambivalence which existed in Akutagawa’s works till the end of his life should attribute to the modern western philosophy and literary works that Akutagawa read.The thesis is divided into three parts. Akutagawa’s opinion on rationality as well as the relationship between rationality and faith is discussed in the first part. The contradiction in his theory above wasn’t solved till the end. Akutagawa’s concept of good and evil is analyzed in the second part. The binary opposition theory of good and evil is one of the essential concepts in Christian Theology. While accept this theory, Akutagawa was confused by Nietzsche. Akutagawa’s self-awareness that revealed by the figure of Jesus in Akutagawa’s The Western man is studied in the third part. Whatever, Akutagawa deconstructed Christianity by describing Jesus as a superhero of Nietzsche. Those three issues indicate that Akutagawa possessed the self-consciousness as a modernist. The anxiety of modernist drove him to despair and pushed him to seek help from Christianity. The effort ended with the deconstruction of the Bible, while the story he wrote is one which consist of modern metaphors. |
