Historical romance novel is an important branch of Chinese fiction, which is a brilliant wave in the long history of Chinese literature. It is one of great achievements in the prosperous Chinese history and ancient novels. It takes historical topics as the theme, with narrative of the novel and characters as creative approaches. It is reasonably combined with various literary genres and on the basis of this is developed its own unique narrative art and characterization techniques to vividly display historical pictures and attract many readers with colloquial language. It is largely taken place of the history books as the heritage of historical memory and history education tool, playing an indelible role in the development of China history and fiction.This paper tries to sum up the unique narrative art and characterization means of historical romance novel by comparing the similarities and differences in narrative art and characters among historical romance novels, historical records and ancient novels. Firstly, the reasonable combination between the pursuit of historical facts and fictional elements in the actual situation with creative theme ideas; Secondly, using the delicate detailed description of "complex but not chaotic, complex but not petty" to realistically and vividly portray the magnificent scenes; Thirdly, successfully introducing rap and poems as well as other literary forms in the creations to add deep literary flavor to historical romance novels; Fourthly, vividly representing numerous, distinctive images of historical figures by the "idealistic" and "typed" characters.In addition, it also explores the impacts of different creative writing purposes on the narrative art and characterization in historical fictions.
