“The remnants” is also called “unnecessary person”, which is one of the classic literatureimages in the history of Chinese and foreign literature.“The remnants” in Yu Dafu’s novelscreated the first image about the remnants in Chinese modern literature history. Since then, thenovel works which make the remnants as the heroines of the novels emerge constantly. Andgoing into the literature, dialoguing with the remnants have become a tendency in the research ofmany scholars.“The remnants” in the novels in the new period includes not only “the persons inthe edge of the culture” who are lonely, depressed, wandering, sinking and not knowing what todo, but also covers the migrant workers who are rootless wandering, have experienced years ofwind and frost, and walking between the urbans and the rurals. They came from differentliterature works, with different “the unbearable lightness of being”. Based on the text and goinginto the history, this paper interpretates from the above two aspects, and analyses the materialand spiritual aspects in two ways about “the intellectual remnants” and “the migrant workerremnants”. This paper mainly interpretates their different superfluous feelings from theperspective of culture identity crisis of the two types of characters. This paper is divided into five parts: the introduction, the first chapter, the second chapter, the third chapter and the conclusion. The introduction is mainly divided into three parts: The first part mainly introduces thethesis topics and research status, and come to the point of view of this paper on the above basis. The second part points to “the remnants” in Yu Dafu’s novels, and analyses its literature origins.explores the survival depression and despairation based on the analysis of texts. and thencompares the remnants in Chinese novels with the remnants in the foreign literature. The thirdpart, defines the meaning of “intellectuals”, explores the rheological study of the remnants inthe modern history of literature, combined with the changes of Chinese culture, comes to thenecessity of the remnants research in the literature in the new period. And then defines “theremnants” in the novels in the new period, divides the remnants into two series:“the intellectualremnants” and “the migrant worker remnants”.The first chapter divides “the remnants” in the novels in the new period into four differentseries, interpretats as quarters, and mainly focuses on the analysis of image features. The four series are: the “no theme” person who lost their spiritual value, such as the heroines in “Youhave No Choice” and “No Theme”; the “painful cracks” who lives in the culture cracks, such asNi Wucheng in “Metamorphosis”; the lonely remnants who are struggling between the river andthe bank, such as Ku Dongliang and Ku Wenxuan in “River and Bank”; the “destructions” whodesire for lustness, such as Zhuang zhidie in “Deserted City”、Shao Jingwen in “Teachers”,Yang Ke in “The Ode to Elegance” and so on. Although they are different images, they have thecommon “superfluous” experiences, face the embarrassment of identity crisis, and becomenowhere to go, wandering “Bohemian”.The second chapter mainly analyses “the migrant worker remnants”.This chapter is dividedinto two sections. The first quarter analyses the reasons why the migrant worker remnants gointo the cities combined with the urban and rural changes. At this background, there are twodifferent cultural forms in the urban and the rural, and more and more literature works appearedabout migrant workers. The first reason is the dream to survive in the city, the other one is thedepressions of the rurals and the attraction of the uabans. The second quarter explores theremnants’ living conditions and spiritual world, mainly interpretats their identity crisis, based onthe novels “Pleased”、“Others’ Cities”、“The Wheat Field in the Sky of Wacheng”、“Kiss inChang’an Avenue”、“Send You a Bouquet of Red Flowers”、“Others’ Home”、“Beijing MigratoryBirds”、“Migrant Workers” and so on. At last to interpretate their suffering aesthetics. The third chapter combines the overview method with the separate method, interpretates theessential characteristics of “the remnants” and the source of depression and wandering at theview of self-identity crisis. This chapter is divided into two quarters. The first quarter, thecultural conflict and the crisis of self-identity, launches the elaboration from the perspective ofculture: traditional culture and modern civilization, the secular spirit and humanistic spirit, ruralculture and city culture. The first two perspectives mainly correspond “the intellectual remnants”,and the third perspective mainly corresponds “the migrant worker remnants”.The second chapterinterpretates that “others’ eye” is also a important factor that caused self-identity crisis. The conclusion, through reflecting the real life, combined with the remnants’ spiritual characteristics in the novels in the new period, we can consider the enlightenment of this kind ofimage.
