“A Dream of the Red Chambers” is the peak of chinese novels, it has very important placein China and even in the world literary history and the research on this classic is of greatsignificance. Through author Cao Xueqin’s superb Portrait Art, every unique and touching“Red Chamber Person” is presented to readers. Reading the text “A Dream of the RedChambers” carefully, you will find there are a lot of “gender reverse” in “Red ChamberPerson”. Some scholars have paid attention to this phenomenon and have done many positiveexplorations, but they have mainly focused on specific characters such as Jia Baoyu and WangXifeng and have rarely even never focused on other characters, at the same time, they have notused “gender reverse” in the whole study on the characters of “A Dream of the Red Chambers”.Considering this situation, the author will make a comprehensive and thorough research on thecharacters of “A Dream of the Red Chambers” in order to make up for the lack of previousresearch.This thesis is divided into three parts including introduction, main body, and conclusion.The specific contents are summarized as follows:The introduction mainly reviewed the history and the present situation of the research onthis topic, introduced the purpose and the significance of the research on this topic andelaborated the contents and means of the research on this topic.The first chapter “Ancient Chinese sex orientation and ‘gender reverse’”.The first sectionintroduces male orientation, it has three aspects including males bear social obligations andresponsibilities while females do not, males must be masculine, males must be gentlemen andtrue men; the second section introduces women’s position, it has three aspects including womenare excluded from social and political life, the female is a humble gender that has no autonomyand independence, women stand for “Yin” and their criteria is “lady”; the third section makesclear the concept of “gender reverse”.The second chapter“The feminine part of male characters in ‘A Dream of the RedChambers’”.
