"Peer gynt" mainly tells the story of a spiritual wanderer looking for self. Peerwho is the son of a yeoman always fancy himself as the emperor, setting up the "onlymyself is enough" as his principle which is the mountain demon’s, he indulged hisdesire to commit a terrible crime in his hometown, which forced him to traveloverseas after her mother’s death. He experienced three self-seeking of identities’ thatinclude the wealthy, and the prophets and archaeologists, but there is still nothing togain on self。In the end of the play, he was solved by love and religious forgivenesswhich comes from his lover Solveig who is very religious."Self" occupies the main status in the drama "peer gynt", the goal of Peer’s life isto find self and keep his true nature. Self concept mainly includes three aspects: thefirst category refers to the personality of their own preferences, to the perception, theaesthetic intention and interest; The second category refers to the self-esteem, selfish,their relations with others, pointing to the person’s ethics relations and ethics morals;The third kind refers to be sure of yourself, self-consciousness, the self survivalconcept that pointing to the end-result of life.These three categories point to the aesthetic taste of the self, ethical relations andthe end-result of life respectively. According to Peer’ individuality and particularity inthe three aspects, I will explore Peer’ self in the artistic characteristics of romanticliterary, ethical literary criticism, Kierkegaard’s philosophy thought respectively,exploring the specific content of literary figure’s self, hoping to understand thecharacter carefully, explaining the literary ethical reasons for literary phenomena andliterary events clearly, reveal the commonalities and differences between Peer’send-result of life and Kierkegaard’s survival preliminarily.This paper is divided into three chapters except introduction and epilogue:The introduction part mainly includes the concept of the self, the classification ofself’s concept, exploring Peer’ self from there angles which include the artisticcharacteristics of romantic literary, ethical literary criticism, Kierkegaard’s philosophythought respectively. In the first chapter, Peer’s self is romantic self. First of all, I summarize the socialbackground of romantic literary trend development in Western Europe and Norway,showing that the attention to self is the common ground of romantic literature trend,and analysis Peer’s ideal,imagination and free expression of self’s emotion from themain characteristics of romantic literature, self is keen on nature appreciation andexotic scene preference, self’s reference, inheritance, refining and sublimation onNorwegian folk literature.In the second chapter, I pointed out that Peer’s ethical dilemma in the first,putting forward that the basic principles of ethical literary criticism should be used inanalysis. Peer’s self is concrete expression of the sphinx factor. Ethical lines andethical knots in the “Peer gynt” are analysed to explain the drama’s plot and Peer’behavior.In the third chapter, I point out the concept of Kierkegaard’s "person’s survival"in the first, then analysing Peer’ self survival by Kierkegaard’s theory of human nature.Finally, I observe Peer’ survival realm by Kierkegaard’ theory of existence spheres.In the conclusion part, Combined with the attention of Ibsen on peer’ self, I try toexplain that Ibsen’s early creation thought includes self-examination andself-reflection.
