The disintegration of the Soviet Union removed the biggest menace towards America’s security interest. The core of the United States’security strategy on Asia-pacific area has changed from countering global war into handling regional conflict. The Korean peninsula plays more important role in its global strategy. After the cold war, the United States kept revising its policy according to the international situation on basis of its national interest. Ever since the cold war, the United States has regarded the North Korea as hostile country and rogue country.Meanwhile,the U.S. has been trying to loosen the relationship of the United states and the DPRK by all sorts of ways,offers some relief as well. This text focuses on the changes and the character of the United States’policy towards North Korea, and tries to find out the reason behind. The end of the cold war made the U.S. did not take communism as threaten any more, and it strengthened the belief to eliminate communism. Therefore, anti-communism plays key role in America’s policy on North Korea. Ideology is an important factor that affects America’s policy after World War Ⅱ. In the long run, America’s policy on North Korea won’t change too much to restrain and contact it. On one side, America takes North Korea as an unpredictable and potential threatening factor to its security in northeast Asia. To restrain the Military adventurism, American will insist on freezing the nuclear development program to weaken the military capability. On the other side, American supports the stability and unification of the Korea peninsula under the leading of South Korea.
