John Dewey from his standpoint of empiricism, pragmatism, or instrumentalism, gives a lotof his own unique insights of modern science. In the philosophy of John Dewey’s pragmatism, modern scientific research is carried out in laboratory with a large number of instruments andequipments, rather than full books in the study. Modern science is a tool for people to cope withliving, life issues, is also to resolve the problems of technology, and even is the truth forexperiment. Therefore, science is a part of life, and no longer exists as a part or branches of thetraditional philosophy. The meaning or value of modern science is leading people to get success.Only in the exploratory experiments to solve the problem, scientific concepts or theories aremeaningful or understandable; only in the exploratory experiments to solve the problem, scientific concepts or theories are proved to be true. John Dewey’s view of science, if from ametaphysical point of view, there is some positive aspect, because it emphasizes the scientifictheory of non-entities, scientific theory of understanding and scientific humanity as a whole. Butfrom the perspective of epistemology, it is obvious that there is difficulties or limitations, because it basically denies the scientific theory of reflecting, objectivity and niversality ofscientific truth. In the view of John Dewey, the starting point and ultimate objective ofphilosophic thinking was “the human problem” in modern society. That is the basicstanding-point of whole scientific view of pragmatism of John Dewey, also is the value of ourresearching. Therefore, when we inherit John Dewey’s thought, we shuold have critical spiritwith John Dewey’s pragmatic theory of science, taking use of its positive side of modern scienceand facing up to its limits.
