America is known as a nation of immigrants. Thousands of immigrants come to America each year and they have made great contributions to its development. But it is not difficult to find such a fact that many of them are illegal immigrants. Since they have made great influence on many aspects of the United States, such as society, economy, population and so on, it is necessary for American government to reform current immigration policies. After making a comprehensive survey of American history, it can be found that several reforms of immigration policy have been made before. But all these efforts fail to achieve the desired objective, which is to make comprehensive reform. With the coming of the global economic crisis in2008, the economy of many countries has been affected deeply including the United States.Since great changes have taken place all over the world, the reform of American immigration policy becomes more and more urgent. But it is so surprising that finally American Congress has vetoed Obama’s proposals offered at the end of2010. Since American immigration policy is affected by several factors, discussing the causes for its failure is of great significance. It can make us understand the current internal and diplomatic policies of the new government. This thesis will make further and detailed analysis about Obama’s failure causes of the immigration policy reform with Huntington’s American national identity theory.
