Taiwan went through a series of enormous changes prior to the abolition of martial law, the international situation and cross-strait relations varied, the political opponent movement and social movement were rising, these changes influenced Taiwan’s development significantly in future. Study on the trend of Taiwan’s political and social changes could nowadays make people understand the situation of Taiwan better.This thesis discusses the trend of Taiwan’s political and social changes prior to the abolition of martial law based on the reports of United Daily News, China Times and Independent Post. The author beholds Taiwan’s political changes according to international element, cross-strait fact and political opposition movement, and then observes Taiwan’s social changes in keeping with the growing of social movement. The conclusions, Kuomintang’s top-down political control was weaken, the bottom-up social forces of Taiwan society escalated.
