On The Early State View Of Chen Du Xiu (1897-1921)

Chen du xiu is a figure of great controversy in the history of the Communist Party ofChina. Recently, Academic research has made great achievements in Chen du xiu.However, there is little concerning the research of Chen’s state view. In this paper, theauthor hopes to do a systematic study of Chen du xiu’s national idea, and sorts out acomplete and accurate understanding of its ideology, make objective and fair assessmenton Chen du xiuChen du xiu lived in an era of turmoil and change, and his thought was filled withcomplexity and contradiction. Facing the Great powers everywhere, the worryingpolitical situation of the country, Chen du xiu thought on the theory of the state in aunique way. Initially, under the situation of national peril, Chen du xiu adhered to theidea of nationalism under the guidance of the traditional patriotic ideas andEnlightenment thought. Nationalism seeks to reach beyond the realm of the reality of thecountry, while patriotism stresses on maintaining the existing state system. Thus, Chendu xiu began to distinguish the contradiction. As a result, the defects of nationalism ledhim to the Evolution of liberalism; while liberalism is inevitable caused a war betweennations, and liberalism became the weapon of power in bullying weak countries, so thatChen began to doubt and deny freedom and democracy of the Western countries. Withthe development and changes of the world political situation and the widespreaddissemination of Marxism in China, he realized the fundamental changes by thebourgeois liberal view of the state to the national view of Marxism. Chen’s continuousdevelopment of the early view of the state, is the tide of the times refraction. Chen du xiuendeavor to explore the precious spiritual wealth of the national prospect at the time ofideological and theoretical field.Chen du xiu treated the traditional Chinese culture and Western progress doctrine asa weapon, to China’s national conditions for thinking object, continuing to explore theimportant role in the Enlightenment and the early formation of national idea at the time,had a major impact on Chinese society at that, but also constitute the creation of Chinesedirect theoretical premise of the Communist Party. However, with any ideological theory,Chen du xiu’s early view of the state is just that particular era, the product of specific historical stage; it is inevitable with the history of limitations, such as confusion of theconcept of government and the state, academic idealist ingredients and in reality, the lackof maneuverability. But it is undeniable, Chen du xiu made tremendous achievements inthe exploration of the theory of the state. His positive thinking cannot be denied by histhe error in late years; either the limitations of his thinking cannot be avoided because ofhis revolutionary behavior.
