Textbooks are the main medium for students to obtain knowledge. It is the studyingof the textbooks that enables students to obtain extensive and systematic knowledge in arelatively short period of time, thus narrowing the gap between Individual cognition andthe whole human understanding. The fact that Chinese Textbook (PEP) is used as thetextbook for bilingual students in all primary schools brings into question how wellstudents in Urumqi adapt to it and how students’ adaptability can be improved.Researches into the appraisal of the adaptability of these textbooks bear practicalsignificance for the development of the chinese as a subject and ensuring smoothadvance of chinese teaching in ethnic regions. this paper aims at analizing the currentstudents’ adaptability situation to Chinese Textbook (PEP), and probing the possibleindications for use of textbooks so as to improve the chinese efficiency of bilingualstudents.Based on class observations and interviews, the present research establishes anevaluation system of student adaptability to Chinese Textbook (PEP) with reference toTheory of education and textbook evaluation, related teaching theory and psychologicaltheory of chinese acquisition. Five dimensions are distinguished in this system: attitude, language efficiency, cultivation of non-intelligence factors and difficulty level. Theweights of dimensions and factors within each dimension are determined by comparativeordering and Logarithm weighted average. A survey is conducted in the form of aquestion air designed according to the above mentioned appraisal system. the result fromanalysis of the data collected shows that the general adaptability of bilingual schoolchildto Chinese Textbook (PEP) is just about average (for pupils at the first teaching stage, thefirst and second radars, the adaptability score is63; for the second teaching stage—thethird and forth graders, the score is also63; and65for the third teaching stage,5th and6th graders) and their adaptability also varies with teaching stages.Based the afore-mentioned appraisal result, this paper analyzes the factorsinfluencing the adaptability of bilingual pupils in Urumqi to Chinese Textbook (PEP).And three suggestions are put forward: a. cultivation of student intelligence should beintensified with emphasis on integrated language capability. b. Bilingual teaching abilityon the teachers; part and students’ chinese competence should be improved; c.compilation of guidance books to the textbook applicable to bilingual students should beaccelerated to develop students’ self-study ability.
