In the early twentieth century, many experts in America suggest that learning outcomes should be assessed to have a better understand of students’learning. Through a long course of development, learning outcomes assessment has been one of the most effective means to ensure the quality of education.According to their own orientation and characteristics, universities choose a certain standard, with the use of various measurement methods and tools, collecting and assessing students’knowledge, attitudes, skills and so on. Compared to the student learning outcomes declared initially, they can judge the education effectiveness, identify problems and shortcomings and find the way of improvement. Actually, learning outcomes assessment is a process to promote students" individual development.Learning outcomes assessment is an effective mechanism for undergraduates to know themselves better, which is also an effective measure for universities to improve the quality and pursue excellence and an effective path for universities to build world-class universities and reach the international level. Besides, the study on learning outcomes assessment can make some contribution to the concepts of higher education quality assurance and the development of its methods.Through outlining the origin and development of learning outcomes assessment, the study aims to show the rich content of learning outcomes and reveal its important role in the system of higher education quality assurance. By analyzing the instrument and category, the practice activity of learning outcome is discussed in depth. In particular, the study focuses on learning outcomes assessment in research universities. Thus, based on the successful experiences of foreign research universities and the practice of Nanjing University, the study attempts to explore the most applicable approach to promote the quality and the efficient way of improvement.
